Brief Description: Lengthy travelogue of a trip to the Pacific Coast by Albert D. Richardson, featuring illustrations, facsimile photographs and prints. Included is a folded map of the Mississippi and the Pacific to accompany Richardson's book. It was first published in 1867 and then revised in 1869. Albert Deane Richardson was an American journalist, Union spy and author of a noted biography of Ulysses S. Grant. Richardson wrote for the New York Tribune owned by Horace Greeley, traveling to battlefields during the Civil War. With fellow journalist Junius Henri Browne, the two reported on the war until they were captured and sent to seven different prisons before escaping from Salisbury prison on December 18, 1864. They reached the Union lines in January 14, 1865. Richardson carried a list of Union prisoners who died at Salisbury and it was published in the Tribune, this being the only real account of their fate. Richardson was fatally shot on November 25, 1869 by Daniel McFarland, a jealous husband of the woman Richardson was in love with.
